This response can take a variety of paths – it could be completed with “…until I get my promotion, or raise, or bonus, or the current project I’m working on is complete, or until my kids graduate this year, or until my spouse finishes his assignment…”.

In summary?  “All this sounds great, but the timing right now is bad” or “All this sounds okay, not great, but this is a logical reason I can give you as to why I’m just really not that interested.”  When you think about it, the best time to do most anything seems to always be in the past!  It’s always best to buy a new car last year, not now.  It’s best to have purchased a new home before the crash, not now.  I’d have been better off by starting my savings and retirement in my 20’s, not now in my 30s, 40s or 50s.  I should have taken that job opportunity 3 years ago when I had the chance to do so.  As you will see in the example responses below, many of the types of objections which fall into this category can be easily overturned through simply educating the candidate on realities of how the timing of events usually happen.  Alternatively, the responses could serve to help your candidate think out of the box about their current situation.

Sometimes candidates may feel bound by their current situation and are therefore blinded to investigating better career opportunities.  This NLE Foundation Training video segment will show you how to give candidates the permission they need to look beyond the micro of their current situation.

Jeff Kaye, CEO and recruiting trainer, covers the challenges associated with “I can’t make a move until” and how they can be addressed by presenting numerous alternate perspectives or even investigating your client’s willingness to wait.
