The biggest reason candidates back out at the final moment, when all previous signs had been pointing to a “yes” answer?  Fear of change.  It is a natural human instinct to crave comfort and security; we like to know what is expected of us and what we can expect from others around us. 

But what people actually fear is loss; it’s the fear of loss that creates the fear of change.  Winning the lottery is a significant life change, but few would ever reject the money because they envision the wealth as being a change for the better.   The walking down the street close can help remove the “comfort” factor that keeps most individuals where they are in service of a profoundly positive life change.
