The reasoning behind not wanting to relocate can be backed by many logical explanations! These could range from health or family obligations, to a destination that is not in alignment with what the candidate wants or needs, to a misunderstanding as to the types of opportunities that exist within the current location.
Although it is truly possible for this objection to be legitimate, a candidate is making a decision on relocation without all of the facts about the client’s opportunity outside of what you have shared in your recruiting presentation.
No decision needs to be made on relocation until a decision has been made on the opportunity being the best possible next step for this individual’s career. In addition, because personal situations and circumstances can change dramatically over time or even over a few days or weeks, make a habit of contacting your candidates about all viable opportunities regardless of past conversations around relocation. A strong preface to make, in addition to utilizing the responses in this section, could be “I realize you’ve shared with me that relocation is not your first choice, but I felt strongly that you would at least want to be made aware of the opportunity this would represent for you.”
